HUNTSVILLE — The New Waverly City Council passed a measure Tuesday night, in conjunction with a signature from Niazi Family Investments, LTD., that will extend water and sewer lines to the west side of Interstate 45 in New Waverly.
The utilities will benefit the truck stop that is currently under construction at the intersection of the I-45 frontage road and Farm Road 1375. The truck stop, which will be operated by King Fuels, will house Chevron gasoline and will also have a Burger King and is scheduled to have its grand opening at the end of May or early in June.
“(The utilitary service agreement) means that we will supply water and sewer to the Niazi family. Once we get it over there we’ll assume the responsibility of the lines and the lift stations and we’ll give them good, clean water,” New Waverly Mayor Dan Underwood said. “It’s definitely a plus for us to get them in the city and get water and sewer across the freeway. It’s a plus for them because they don’t have to worry about anything.”
While the utility service agreement has short-term effects, allowing the truck stop access to water and sewer, it also benefits New Waverly in the long-term as well.
“We will be getting money from the sales tax off of everything that’s sold out there,” Underwood added. “I think long-term, it’s going to open up things and more companies will want to come in and want to build.”
The council also:
• Approved minutes from February 9, 2010 meeting.
• Approved financial reports for February 2010.
• Approved 5-T Utilities’ bid for water and sanitary sewer for truck stop.
• Approved R&B Group’s bid for wastewater treatment plant No. 1 improvements.
• Approved posting of “No Thru Semi Trucks” sign on Longstreet Road.
• Approved Director of Public Works’ report for February 2010.
