Letters From Our Readers

Changes need to be made in Congress

First let me say that I am mad and disgusted. I read Congressman Brady’s news release printed in the Item on Oct. 5.

In this release, he blamed everyone except himself, Congress and the irresponsible people who took out loans knowing they could not pay the notes.  I sure never heard him sound any warnings about all the bad things he writes about in his press release.

He also states in this article and I quote, “I also disagreed with the Senate adding a porked up tax relief bill to the bailout package.”

If he felt so strongly I wonder why his office never responded to my request for a list of the legislatures who put pork in the bail-out bill?

He felt bad about it but not bad enough to say who they were.

I also asked Congressman Brady to take an active role in have Barney Frank removed as chairman of his finance committee, no response.

Obviously our congressmen thinks that things are going to be the same as usual, well they are not!

I emailed Congressman Brady on at least three occasions on various issues with no response on any of them.  In my last email I stated I was going to write to the paper about my concerns if he did not feel that my requests were important enough, no response.

How any person in Congress today can take their pay check and not feel guilty is beyond me.

Here are three things that need to change in Congress.

1. Term Limits

2. Retirement should be 401k and Social Security like all the rest of us working people, or as they like to call us now “Main Street.”

3. Any laws that are passed by Congress should apply to them as it does to everyone else.

4. They should have to pass a bill every year to get a raise, they sure don't deserve one this year.

What we the people need to do is elect Congressmen who are willing to stand up and speak out about  bad policies and out of control spending.  We have enough Congressmen whose only concern is protecting the status quo, which is what we are getting now.

As I stated at the beginning I am mad, and guess what?  Almost everyone I talk to is mad also.  So if Congressman Brady, and the rest of Congress thinks that after nearly bankrupting the nation, that things are going back to the way they have always been they are very mistaken.

I think it is time for a new congressman, someone who will stand up and speak out about changing the character of Congress, not simply vote and think they are doing their job.
