Though June Young has passed away, the resale shop that bears her name exudes the same kindness for which the long-time hospice nurse was so well-known with a caring staff, a compassionate mission, and friendly pair of cats that serve as the greeting crew for each customer that walks through the door.
With the contributions of current and former health care workers, June’s Time Resale Shop has become a source of funding and a reminder of importance for hospice care in Huntsville.
Marilyn Louther, who still works in the health care business in Huntsville, decided to open the shop in 2002 at the suggestion of friends in the health care industry.
Now, it is her daughter, Rhonda Moore, who manages the shop and tends to the aisles of merchandise composed of clothing items, home decor, hardware, jewelry and various household goods.
Prior to becoming a full-time employee at June’s Time, Moore worked at Home Health of Huntsville for 17 years.
“I took the job so I could spend time with my kids,” Moore said. “This was something different for me. I had never done retail before.”
In January, the store relocated from their original location on state Highway 19 to its current building just one block north of 11th Street.
According to Moore, the store has experienced a drop in sales due to the weak economy and is hoping to raise more awareness and more business to help support their cause.
Their new location closer at 927 Sam Houston Avenue, however, has helped by bringing in a crowd of new customers as well as better technology to help in the completion of purchases.
“We’ve really felt the crunch in this economy. Especially in September, we really felt it,” Moore said. “But it’s been a good move. We have a credit card machine in this building and that has helped. We have a lot of repeat customers, but since the move we’ve gotten a lot of new customers.”
The new location has also allowed the staff to bring more items out of storage with a much larger building and expanded space to display more merchandise.
Moore said that all of the merchandise is donated to the store while all proceeds except bills and Young’s salary go to hospice care in the community.
“We support any hospice anywhere in our area,” Moore said. “If we have the funds, they send us the request.”
June’s Time is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the store located at 927 Sam Houston Avenue.
