The Lady Hornets might have lost out on an outright district title Tuesday night at Willis, but the Lady Hornets got a big win Wednesday.

Huntsville head coach Jay Oliphant won a coin flip with Lady Wildkats coach Kelly Savoy to decided which team would be the top seed in the bi-district playoffs next week and the matchup has been set. The Lady Hornets will face Elgin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan High School.

“Coach Savoy and I flipped a coin last night and I had the option of the first or second seed, whichever would best help us in the bracket,” Oliphant said Thursday. “I felt like the top spot was the best chance for us to move on in the playoffs.

“We like the location because it is close enough for our fans to travel. Our girls are also familiar with Bryan High School.”

The Lady Hornets went 10-2 to tie for first place in District 18-4A. Huntsville also had a remarkable overall record of 21-6.

Elgin finished fourth in District 17-4A with a 6-6 league mark. The Lady Wildcats went 7-12 overall.

That’s about all Oliphant knows about the next opponent, but that is going to change this weekend.

“I got two tapes on them today,” the coach said. “I’m going to watch them Friday and this weekend. Maybe we can find a weakness to attack, but if we play our game, we will be fine.”

The New Waverly girls basketball team won a coin flip to grab the second seed for the playoffs out of District 21-2A, but the Lady Bulldogs will not find out who they are playing until this weekend.

New Waverly (20-8) will face either Newton or Kirbyville next week in bi-district. The Lady Eagles and Lady Wildcats finished tied for third place in District 22-2A and have elected to play a tiebreaker contest either today or Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs are tentatively scheduled to play the Newton-Kirbyville winner at 6 p.m. Monday at Angelina College in Lufkin.
