The Lady Bulldogs took one step closer toward getting into the playoffs after cruising past Onalaska 56-16 Friday night.
Kayla Williams led New Waverly’s cause with 20 points and nine rebounds. Myeisha Williams poured in 11 points and pulled down five boards. Post Jai Cleveland chipped in eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Mekayla McBride finished with seven points. Alex Abbott scored six points, Whitney McCullough contributed with three and Lavonna Smith added one point.
“We started out a little slow,” New Waverly head coach Eldridge McAdams said. “We just couldn’t put any shots in.”
The Lady Dogs led by six after the first quarter and then jumped to a 24-8 lead at the half.
“We did some good things,” McAdams said. “We came out in the second half and picked up the intensity. We got some steals and started to play our game. We didn’t look back after that.”
Pending results from Friday, the Lady Dogs (9-4 in District 21-2A, 18-8 overall) remain in a three-way tie for second place with Groveton and Buffalo with only two teams advancing to the playoffs.
For New Waverly, it’s pretty simple. If the Lady Dogs win their regular-season finale on Tuesday against Groveton, which defeated New Waverly 42-28 on Jan. 15, they’ll once again head to the playoffs.
“This is going to be a big game for us,” McAdams said. “We knew this last stretch was going to be key. It’s all on us now. It all boils down to what we do. There’s no added pressure on us. We just have to come out and play Lady Dog basketball and it shouldn’t be a problem.”
New Waverly boys 86, Onalaska 38
It was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Bulldogs.
The Dogs came out firing on all cylinders and blasted the Wildcats 86-38 Friday.
“We came out with our usual intensity,” New Waverly head coach Bill Goffney said. “They moved the ball, they made a lot of outside shots. The guys also did a good job at eliminating turnovers.”
X’Zavious Harrison led with 44 points. Seniors Tyren and Kyren Watts scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Dillian Scott and Cody James each scored eight points. Isaiah Gilliam and Josh Durriseau finished with six apiece. Wes Wagner added five points and Jonathan and Arthur Reece chipped in two points each.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-0 in district and moved within a game of winning their third straight outright district title.
“The guys just approach the games with a workmanlike effort,” Goffney said. “They just work every day. They don’t talk about rankings. They’re just focused on getting back to Austin and finishing the job this time. They’re really focused and determined.”

All-State Bulldogs
After advancing all the way to the regional semifinals as relative unknowns with little playoff experience in 2009, the Bulldogs knew they would have a lot more attention in 2010.
Ranked among the top five in the state for most the season, New Waverly did not disappoint. -
Dynamic Duo
NEW WAVERLY — The taste is still bitter for the Bulldogs.
The New Waverly baseball squad is still haunted from last year’s surprising exit in the regional semifinals against White Oak. The Dogs took game one of the best-of-three series and had a 6-1 lead in the second contest heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Things went terribly wrong from there and New Waverly was left wondering what happened as White Oak rallied to win two in a row and steal the series. -
Complete package
NEW WAVERLY — New Waverly baseball coach Tommy Bohannon was hoping he could talk Hardin, the Bulldogs’ area-round playoff opponent, into moving up next week’s series to accommodate the state track and field meet.

Bulldogs are back again in 2010
They’ve been here before and know Austin all too well. Two years ago, the New Waverly Bulldogs made their first trip to the state tournament, but it ended rather quickly in a disappointing blowout loss to Tuscola Jim Ned.
Then last March, the Bulldogs got past Shallowater and advanced to the state championship game only to fall to defending state champion Ponder 51-39.
This time around, the Bulldogs are determined to take another step forward and come back with a state championship. They’re back again in 2010, and they say they’re going to finish the job this time. -
Bulldogs pass first test
NEW CANEY — Though it had been more than a week since the New Waverly boys played a meaningful game, the Dogs didn’t show an ounce of rust Thursday night.

Lady Dogs live to play another day
Leading by 16 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, it appeared as if the Lady Dogs would coast to an easy playoff victory.
The only problem was that Kirbyville never stopped playing. The feisty Ladycats made a game out of it.
Barely, the Lady Dogs held on, escaping with a 52-51 victory in Angelina College’s Shands Gym to advance to the area round of the Class 2A playoffs. - Lady Bulldogs start playoffs Monday night in Lufkin
