Warren ends Lady Dogs’ playoff run

New Waverly falls in straight sets in area round

GROVETON — The Lady Bulldogs couldn’t conjure up the kind of magic that helped them notch their first playoff victory on Thursday at Groveton.

New Waverly dug itself into too big of a hole in each of the three sets and were eliminated from the Class 2A playoffs by 19th-ranked Warren 25-15, 25-16 and 25-20.

“It was a good game,” Lady Bulldogs senior Mallory Eastland said. “We got down a little, but we’re a fighting team. We fought back in that last game. Even though we lost, I couldn’t be any more proud of our team.”

After jumping out to a solid start in the first game, mental errors started to pile up on New Waverly.

The Lady Bulldogs (23-13) trailed 10-9, but Warren senior middle hitter Shaina Brent hit a couple of spikes to give the Lady Warriors a three-point lead. Then New Waverly hit the ball out of bounds on the next few points and Warren ran away with the game.

The Lady Bulldogs ran into the same kind of trouble in the second game and fell behind 13-2 to begin the game.

Then New Waverly began to rally thanks to spikes by junior Kayla Munoz and senior Alena Salinas, coupled with mental errors by Warren (38-4) to get the Lady Dogs to within six at 15-9.

Warren regrouped and jumped out to a 20-9 lead.

New Waverly tried to claw back, winning the next five points to get within six again. But Warren regained its composure and closed the game winning five of the final seven points.

The deciding game was the closest one of the three, but this time the Lady Dogs kept it close throughout.

New Waverly trailed by one at 17-16 after Eastland scored an ace, but then Warren junior outside hitter Ciara Wisecup scored a couple of kills down the stretch.

The Lady Warriors clinched the match when Brent hit two straight aces.

“I think we could’ve played better,” New Waverly head coach Stacy Hill said, “but of course you always think you can play better. It was a mentally challenging game. It was quite possibly the best team we saw all year long. It’s tough, it really is.

“At the end of the season when you’ve done something no other team in our school history has done, you look back over your season and you can be proud of it.”

    After advancing all the way to the regional semifinals as relative unknowns with little playoff experience in 2009, the Bulldogs knew they would have a lot more attention in 2010.
    Ranked among the top five in the state for most the season, New Waverly did not disappoint.

  • Dynamic Duo

    NEW WAVERLY — The taste is still bitter for the Bulldogs.
    The New Waverly baseball squad is still haunted from last year’s surprising exit in the regional semifinals against White Oak. The Dogs took game one of the best-of-three series and had a 6-1 lead in the second contest heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
    Things went terribly wrong from there and New Waverly was left wondering what happened as White Oak rallied to win two in a row and steal the series.

    NEW WAVERLY — New Waverly baseball coach Tommy Bohannon was hoping  he could talk Hardin, the Bulldogs’ area-round playoff opponent, into moving up next week’s series to accommodate the state track and field meet.

  • Bulldogs are back again in 2010

    They’ve been here before and know Austin all too well.Two years ago, the New Waverly Bulldogs made their first trip to the state tournament, but it ended rather quickly in a disappointing blowout loss to Tuscola Jim Ned.
    Then last March, the Bulldogs got past Shallowater and advanced to the state championship game only to fall to defending state champion Ponder 51-39.
    This time around, the Bulldogs are determined to take another step forward and come back with a state championship. They’re back again in 2010, and they say they’re going to finish the job this time.

  • Bulldogs pass first test

    NEW CANEY — Though it had been more than a week since the New Waverly boys played a meaningful game, the Dogs didn’t show an ounce of rust Thursday night.
    With a strong defensive effort, the top-ranked Bulldogs cruised past East Chambers 78-36 and into the Region III quarterfinals where they’ll face either fourth-ranked Kountze or Buffalo early next week.

    The only problem was that Kirbyville never stopped playing. The feisty Ladycats made a game out of it.

    Barely, the Lady Dogs held on, escaping with a 52-51 victory in Angelina College’s Shands Gym to advance to the area round of the Class 2A playoffs.
