Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary

Fabric Etching Workshop

The Wynne Home will present a Fabric Etching Workshop on Friday through Sunday presented by artist Tamara Chasteen. Participants will have the unique opportunity to use the artist’s personal collection of antique copper tjaps (batik stamps) in addition to trying traditional free hand techniques. The focus will be on layering color using wax resist to reserve color and to produce secondary color through overdyeing. Products will include cotton and silk items from white goods purchased from the artist or brought to class by the participant. Batik is great for salvaging stained or faded garments. Age requirement 12+. This class is ideal for any skill level. Trail Ride

The Hwy. 30 W. 2550 Ridahz will hold its second annual ride Friday and Saturday at 2550 and Wire Road in Huntsville. Aug. 27 activities include a campout and dance with a live DJ, with the trail ride line up taking place at 3 p.m. on Aug. 28. The HMH Auxiliary is sponsoring a uniform sale with “Scrubs & Beyond” on Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the HMH Cafeteria Side Room. “Scrubs & Beyond” has quality uniforms and shoes, and will special order what you need if they don’t have it with them. The sale is a fundraiser of the HMH Auxiliary.



Station Dedication

Riverside Volunteer Fire Department will dedicate its new Scarborough Station, located at 97 Sterling Chapel Road on Friday from 6-9 p.m. Free hot dogs and drinks available.

Flick and Float

The City of Huntsville Recreation Services and the Huntsville Aquatic Center partner together for an outdoor movie at the pool on Saturday. This event is held at the Huntsville Aquatic Center and will begin at 8 p.m. or dark; this year the movie will be “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”  Participants are welcome to bring approved floating devices for the pool seating. There are free ice cream floats, drinks and other snacks available at the concession stand on a first-come, first serve basis.



Sam Houston Weavers and Spinners Guild

The Sam Houston Weavers and Spinners Guild will meet on Saturday at the Carriage Inn, 2805 Lake Road, for a demonstration and hands-on class on how to “prep” fiber. Two Guild members, who are experienced in preparing commercial raw fleece and fleece as it is sheared from fiber goats, will demonstrate and guide us through readying fleece for spinning in the Craft Room at 10 a.m. Contact B.J. Car Wash

Robinson Memorial Church of God in Christ adult choir will hold a car wash on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the church parking lot, 515 Ave. M in Huntsville. Cost is $5 per car. All proceeds benefit the choir.

Rock Star

The City of Huntsville and Sam Houston State University have partnered to bring the community a free rock climbing program for all ages. This program is designed to teach children, youth, students and adults the basic techniques of rock climbing. Participants will spend time learning about rock climbing equipment, terminology, safety, knot-tying and more! Participants will also have plenty of time to test their skills on SHSU’s indoor rock wall! Children under the age of 16 are required to be accompanied by an adult. Miss Essence Scholarship Pageant

Miss Essence Scholarship Pageant is now open to all high school young ladies of any nationality in grades 9-12, and ages 14-19. Advanced registration is through Aug. 31 for a fee of only $25. Registration fee of $30 will begin Sept. 1. KC Fish Fry

The Knights of Columbus will serve their Fish Fry dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, at St. Thomas Catholic Church Hall, located at 16th and M Streets in Huntsville. Hunter Education Certification Class

A Hunter Education Certification Class for persons born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, will be conducted at the City of Huntsville Service Center on Friday Sept. 3 from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Minimum ages for certification is 9 years old; persons under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Cost for the 2-day course is $15 and covers all materials. Students should dress appropriately for outdoor activities on Saturday and bring their own personal archery equipment. All persons desiring to take this class must pre-register and bring their Social Security Card to class to register. Labor Day Barbecue

Thomas Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department will host a Labor Day Barbecue on Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sliced barbecue brisket, sausage and chicken with all the trimmings. Cake Auction at 12:30 p.m. Eat in or take out. Cost for adults is $7, children 6-10 $3.50, under 6 eat for free. Proceeds go to support the volunteer fire department.



Garbage Pick-up

The City of Huntsville Solid Waste Division will run regular residential and commercial garbage pick-up on Labor Day, Sept. 6. The Recycling Center will be closed to the public, but reopen on Tuesday.



Lutheran Social Services

Lutheran Social Services of the South is looking for families that are interested in foster care and or adoption that are willing to provide a safe, secure and loving home to a child or children in need. These children have been removed from their biological families due to some form of abuse, neglect or abandonment. This meeting will inform potential foster/adoptive parents what the steps are in making a difference in the life of a child or children. Voter Registration Event

New Waverly for New Waverly Youth along with the New Waverly Public Library will hold a Voter Registration event from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 11 in the Texas Room of the library. New Waverly Public Library Fundraiser

The New Waverly Public Library will hold "Under the Big Top” Garage and Craft Sale on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 75 and 150 in New Waverly. There will be vendors (no food vendors, please), a library sale table including books, and lunch and drinks for sale. A turkey leg for $5 or sausage on a stick for $3. Soft drinks and water for $1. Clay Crosse Concert and Holy Homes Marriage Conference

University Heights Baptist Church, 2400 Sycamore Ave., Huntsville, will host a two-day marriage and family event on Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12.  A concert featuring contemporary Christian music performer Clay Crosse will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Prostate Blood Tests and Exams

Huntsville Memorial Hospital and Dr. Paul Kenworthy will offer free Prostate Blood Tests and Exams on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the HMH Surgery Department. This screening is offered to men age 40 or older, who have not had a prostate screening in the last 3 years.
