Items must be submitted via e-mail or U.S. Postal Service. All submissions must be typed and may be e-mailed to newsroom@itemonline.com. Handwritten submissions will not be accepted.

New York Fundraiser

A sausage wrap, bake sale fundraiser will be held today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2707 Sam Houston Ave. in Huntsville in the parking lot of Zach’s Bar and Grill to help support Jessica O’Bryant to the All Star Dancers Convention in New York City. Memorial Weekend     Fish Fry

Thomas Lake Road VFD will hold its annual Memorial Weekend Fish Fry today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost for adults is $7, children ages 6 to 10 is $3.50, and children under 6 are free. Cake auction begins at 12:30 p.m.



Fundraiser

The Spanish Baptist Church, 1709 Highway 30 East, will hold a fundraiser today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Handmade crafts will be for sale. Refreshments available.

Memorial Day Service

The HEARTS Veterans Museum will hold a Memorial Day Service on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Conference Center. Keynote speaker will be Lt. Col. David Yebra and Major Allen Hann. The Huntsville Community Senior Adult Choir and the Huntsville Community Men’s Choir will perform patriotic music. Admission is free and all veterans will be recognized. Memorial Day Garbage Pickup

The City of Huntsville Solid Waste Division will run regular residential and commercial garbage pick-up routes on Monday, Memorial Day. The Solid Waste Transfer Facility will also be open for business on Monday. The Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at 590 IH-45 North, will be closed to the public on Monday, but will open as usual on Tuesday. Memorial Day Salute

Join Recreation Services on Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate Memorial Day in style at the Aquatic Center. There will be free swimming, music, a Patriotic bathing suit contest, a hot dog eating contest, watermelon seed spitting contest, free popcorn and drinks on a first come first serve basis and much more. Memorial Day Ceremony

American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit 618 will honor our fallen soldiers at 10 a.m. on Monday. The Memorial Ceremony will be held at the Post located 1 mile east of Willis on hwy 1097. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (936) 856-5224.

Texas Reading Club Registration at the Library

The Huntsville Public Library will host the annual Texas Reading Club. This free program is open to children from birth to 18. Registration begins at the library on Tuesday and continues during the summer. Participants will receive a book donated by the Kiwanis Club at registration (while supplies last). Spaghetti Dinner

The American Legion Post 95 in Huntsville, Ladies Auxiliary is hosting its Monthly Spaghetti Dinner on Wednesday. The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. and last until the food runs out. For a donation of $5 per plate your meal will consist of homemade spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, tossed salad with dressing, and dessert.

Ryan Osborn Memorial fundraiser

A barbecue sandwich fundraiser for the Ryan Osborn Memorial Fund will be held on Friday. A sandwich and chips will be delivered to local businesses on Friday. The deadline is to order is Wednesday at noon. There must be a five sandwich minimum delivery (unless we are going near another business), with deliveries occurring between 10a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost is $5 per sandwich. Contact Kerry Murray at Murski’s, (936) 293-1600, to order. There will also be a live and silent auction at Murski’s on Saturday, June 12, at 6 p.m. There will be live entertainment as well. All money raised will go to the Ryan Osborn Memorial Fund.

Jail-A-Thon

The Senior Center’s Sixth annual Jail-A-Thon will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. All warrants need to be turned in by Thursday or you can turn yourself in at the Senior Center Court. A lunch of fried chicken and all the trimmings will be served for $6. For more information, contact Claudia at (936) 295-6151.

Bow Hunter Education Certification Class

A Bow Hunter Education Certification Class for persons born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, will be conducted at the City of Huntsville Service Center on Friday from 6-10 p.m. and Saturday June 5 from 8-4 p.m. Minimum ages for certification is 9 years old; persons under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Cost for the two-day course is $15 and covers all materials. Students should dress appropriately for outdoor activities on Saturday and bring their own personal archery equipment. All persons desiring to take this class must pre-register and bring their Social Security Card to class to register. Black Saints MC of Huntsville’s Second Annual Celebration will be held June 5 at David Branch Rodeo Pen. Motorcycle ride from 6-8 p.m. and party from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.  Cost for ride and party $10. HHS Class of 1970 reunion

The Huntsville High School Class of 1970 will celebrate its 40th reunion on June 5 on the second floor dining room of The Junction Resturant at 2611 11th St. Meet at 4 p.m. for drinks, followed by dinner between 5-5:30 p.m. and catching up with old friends until around 10-10:30 p.m. The only cost associated with the reunion is whatever food or drink is ordered from the menu. Senior Center Garage Sale

Mended Hearts Support Group

The Mended Hearts Support Group will meet on June 9 at noon at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Dr. David Ficklen will speak on hypertension and medications. Please RSVP to (936) 291-4594 by June 8. Light lunch will be served. 



SAAFE House Crawfest

The 5th annual SAAFE House Crawfest sponsored by Wiesner of Huntsville is quickly approaching. The event will be held June 10  at the Walker County Fairgrounds and will feature live music by Brison Bursey Band, silent and live auctions, plus crawfish, chicken and sausage gumbo and all the fixings. Tickets for the event are $25 per person or tables of 8 may be reserved for $200. The silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature items for everyone. Birthday Party for M.B. Etheredge

Lineage Society Workshop

The Huntsville Public Library will host a Lineage Workshop on Wednesday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 1216 14th Street. Admission is free, but reservation are required. Lunch is Dutch treat from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Anyone interested in lineage can participate in this workshop. Bring any genealogical and family  materials you have (birth, death and marriage certificates, Bible records, etc.). Chamber Luncheon

Texas Commissioner for Agriculture Todd Staples will be the featured speaker at the next Chamber Lunch and Learn set for Tuesday, June 22. The luncheon will be held at Elkins Lake Clubhouse. Seating will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the program will end at 1 p.m. Tickets for the luncheon are only $15. You do not have to be a member of the chamber but reservations and payment are required. Barbecue Cook-off

The American Legion Sam Houston Post 95 in Huntsville is having its Celebrate America BBQ Cook-off on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3. All proceeds benefit the Sam Houston Post 95 charities. This cook-off is TGCBCA sanctioned. In addition to the cook-off rules, the cook-off will follow TGCBCA rules and all judging will be monitored by the TGCBCA organization. Sam Houston alumni meeting

The National Alumni Association of Sam Houston High School will hold its Annual Reunion and Business Meeting in Huntsville during the period, July 26-31, 2010.  On Friday, July 30, an “Elegant Reunion Banquet” will be held at the Walker County Fairgrounds.  The Board of the Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center will join the Association in honoring the last faculty and all students attending the school prior to its closing.  We are interesting in contacting students enrolled at Sam Houston Elementary School and Sam Houston High School from 1966- 1968, the staff and faculty members.  If you have information on these individuals or need further information about the reunion, contact Dr. Naomi W.
