Sophomore pitcher Matt Roberts and the New Waverly Bulldogs were close to perfect Thursday night at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin. Roberts outdueled White Oak righthander Blake Ware in a 2-0 victory in the first game of a best-of-three Region III semifinal series. Roberts fanned 11 and walked none in a one-hit shutout. The Bulldogs and Roughnecks will clash again Saturday at Central High School in Pollok. Game time is 3 p.m.
